June 9, 2014 - Is your past dictating your future? Are you spending a significant amount of time wishing you had handled something from the past in a different way? Are you revisiting your past decisions or past actions over and over again in order to determine what went wrong or did not transpire as you had hoped or planned? Are you having a difficult time letting go of certain feelings or resentments about a past situation? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, you are allowing your past to dictate your future by either taking your focus away from your ability to progress or keeping you caught in the past instead of embracing the present. The end result is a future that is not as you had hoped, causing you to be in an endless cycle of hindsight guilt versus foresight empowerment.
Take an MM&I Moment to ask yourself how valuable it is to spend your time belaboring a situation within your mind or with others over and over again. Cut to the core of the matter and focus instead on what you have learned from your past situation. Try to see a benefit from what transpired that you have been too emotionally invested to see. How have you become wiser? How have you become more knowledgeable? How have you gained insight that you did not possess before? Instead of asking yourself why something has happened TO you, ask instead why it may have happened FOR you. When you take a step back with a perspective of moving beyond a situation with insight, you then can move forward with confidence, with no regrets, and with forward-thinking action.
